Tim's Shop › Acoustic Guitar Phone Speaker

A small acoustic guitar body made from layered pallet wood, with a soundhole, a burned rosette and a phone standing in a slot in the top

The picture shows the design. Yours is made from its own reclaimed boards, so the grain, colour and marks will be unique to it.

Tim's a big fan of the acoustic guitar, and this is his favourite piece in the shop. Stand your phone in the slot, press play, and the music comes out of the soundhole louder and fuller than the phone could manage on its own.

Every part is reclaimed pallet wood. The body is four layers, each cut from a single old pallet board, so you can see the stripes of different woods round the sides. The top has a hand-burned rosette round the soundhole, and the short neck has burned frets, six strings and tuning pegs whittled from offcuts.

It works with phones whose speaker is on the bottom edge, which is nearly all of them. If your phone also has a speaker at the top, that one carries on playing as normal. Choose the wide slot if your phone lives in a chunky case.

How it works

A phone's speaker is tiny, smaller than your fingernail. On its own it can only nudge a little air, and most of the sound spills out in every direction and fades.

Hidden inside this guitar is a horn, carved right through one of the layers. It starts narrow, exactly where the phone's speaker sits, and widens smoothly all the way to the soundhole.

At the narrow end, the little speaker pushes hard against a small pocket of air. As the horn widens, that push is passed on to more and more air, a bit like a ripple gathering into a wave, until it leaves the soundhole as a much bigger sound. The sealed wooden walls keep the sound in the horn instead of letting it leak away.

It's the same trick as a megaphone or an old gramophone horn. Nothing to charge, nothing to pair, nothing to go wrong.

Every one is different

The pictures show each design. Yours is cut from its own reclaimed boards, so the grain, colour, knots and old nail holes will be its own. Tim only uses heat-treated pallets, never chemically treated ones.

Returns

Personalised pieces are made just for you, so they can't be returned unless something's wrong. If anything arrives damaged or faulty, email [email protected] with a photo and we'll put it right.
